Research Opportunity for Members

Fiona Campbell is an academic based within the Population Health Sciences Institute at  Newcastle University and a member of NGH.

Fiona says that the NIHR (the research branch of the NHS) are funding research teams to look at ways to decarbonise the health and social care sector. The NHS has a target to achieve net zero by 2040  (https://www.health.org.uk/reports-and-analysis/briefings/net-zero-care-what-will-it-take) and so there is considerable investment being made to support decarbonisation initiatives.

Fiona has asked if any members of NGH would be willing to support her and her team with a research grant that they are about to apply for:  https://www.nihr.ac.uk/funding/decarbonising-health-and-social-care-system/2024217

The team would very much welcome being supported by citizen advisors as it is imperative that this work is not only informed by topic experts and researchers, but also by the people that are affected by the outcomes of research.

The type of support needed includes:

  • providing advice and insights into the research question and its importance and value;
  • commenting on the proposal and how it is written to ensure it makes sense to anyone reading it;
  • commenting on the methods and outcomes;
  • identifying the best ways to share the research.

If funding is successful the time given by volunteers will be renumerated and the team would aim to ensure that the mechanisms for providing input were as flexible as possible to fit with existing commitments the advisors would have.

The team also needs some volunteers who would be willing to give some advice on the application itself. This would be done via a couple of on-line meetings to gather views and the aim would be to run these in the next two weeks.

The submission date for the submission is March 26th – so if you are interested in being involved – either as a volunteer to advise on the application, or to be part of the citizen advisory group (or both!) – please get in touch by email to Fiona at Fiona.campbell1@ncl.ac.uk as soon as possible.
